Illustrator Pedro Oyarbide will present his edition of El rayo que no cesa, by Miguel Hernández, on Tuesday 27 October at 19:00 at the Ateneo Cultural Casino Orcelitano in Orihuela.
The event is part of the ‘Bajo la higuera’ series, with free admission until capacity is reached. Published in 2026 by Lunwerg Editores, part of the Planeta group, the book will be the focus of his talk.
From hand drawing to book covers
Born in Madrid in 1988 and now living in Valencia, Oyarbide graduated in Fine Arts from Madrid’s Complutense University and studied Graphic Design at HAWK in Hildesheim, Germany.
His professional career began in the United Kingdom, working with studios and advertising agencies. Since 2013 he has worked as a freelance illustrator, taking commissions from both international brands and publishing houses.
His work combines references to classical engravings and ornamental art with elements of contemporary graphic culture. Hand drawing, bold lines and intricate compositions characterise an approach in which detail and ornamentation play a prominent role.
Brands he has worked for include Nike, Red Bull, Hurley, O’Neill, Miller Lite and Globe. His publishing work includes projects for Planeta, Lunwerg, Blackie Books, Neri Pozza, Penguin Books, Duomo and Vallardi.
A publishing career that includes ‘Blackwater’
In recent years he has specialised in book covers and publishing projects. His work includes Michael McDowell’s Blackwater saga, published by Blackie Books in 2022, whose covers have appeared in twelve countries.
He has also worked on Dante Alighieri’s El infierno, published by Blackie Books in 2024; Hija de la venganza, in 2025; and an illustrated edition of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s El principito, published by Lunwerg in 2024.
Between 2022 and 2026 he also produced covers for the French and Italian editions of McDowell’s collection, including titles such as Agujas doradas, Katie and Los Elementales.
The Orihuela presentation will focus on his illustrated approach to Hernández’s work. His forthcoming publishing projects also include a planned illustrated edition of Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s La sombra del viento for Editorial Planeta.
