Venezuelan poet and teacher Sixto Sánchez will give a talk and poetry reading on contemporary Latin American poetry at Orihuela’s Fernando de Loazes Public Library on Monday, 26 October, at 19:00.
The Miguel Hernández Cultural Foundation is organising the event with the library’s collaboration, and admission will be free until the venue hosting this literary gathering reaches its capacity.
The programme combines a talk with a poetry recital, so the introduction to contemporary Latin American writing will include both the author’s presentation and the reading of poetry.
A career connecting teaching and theatre
Born in 1953, Sánchez graduated in literature from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1987 and obtained a master’s degree in educational planning from the Universidad Bicentenaria de Aragua in 2004.
His qualifications also include teacher training at the Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador’s Instituto de Mejoramiento Profesional del Magisterio, forming part of a career that brings together literary work and teaching.
He has directed the poetry workshop at the Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos Rómulo Gallegos since 1982 and is a retired lecturer from the Universidad Politécnica Territorial de Paria Luis Mariano Rivera in Carúpano, Sucre state.
At that university he taught language and communication and sociopolitical education; his professional career also includes teaching theatre at the Instituto Universitario de Teatro during the years 1991 and 1992.
He was also a member of the Compañía Nacional de Teatro between 1986 and 1989 and took part in the Festival Mundial de Poesía between 2006 and 2009.
Books and contributions to Latin American magazines
His bibliography includes Continuidad, published in 1981; Respiradero, in 1991; Caminos en la oscuridad, in 1996; Desde la periferia, in 2000; Sin tiempo, in 2004; and En una misma piel, in 2015.
A reissue of Respiradero followed in 2010, while his writing has appeared in magazines including Remolinos, from Lima; Destiempos, from Mexico; Letralia, from Venezuela; and Salvaje Literatura y arte.
