San Javier council has approved a proposal to designate 16 September as Municipality Day, following a motion from the Pleamar municipal group to commemorate the definitive establishment of the local council in 1836.
The motion passed at the plenary meeting on 16 October with support from every municipal group except the Partido Popular, which abstained, according to a statement from Pleamar.
The initiative provides for the date to enter the institutional calendar from 2027, after San Javier marked 190 years of municipal independence in 2026.
A date rooted in local history
The chosen day recalls 16 September 1836, when San Javier definitively became a municipality independent of Murcia, following earlier historical developments in 1813 and 1820.
Pleamar presents the commemoration as an opportunity to introduce younger generations to local history and strengthen the sense of belonging among people across the municipality.
The group wants the celebration to go beyond a ceremonial occasion and provide a way to share the municipality’s traditions and identity, while recognising contributions to its development.
The motion envisages promoting institutional, cultural, educational and public information activities relating to the history and evolution of San Javier.
It also allows for the anniversary to be used to recognise publicly the achievements of individuals, associations, organisations and groups that have played a significant role in the local community.
A celebration across the municipality
Pleamar considers it important for the day to have a presence in San Javier and Santiago de la Ribera, as well as La Manga del Mar Menor, El Mirador, Roda and Pozo Aledo.
Its proposed geographical scope also includes the remaining settlements and outlying districts, with the aim of enabling residents to feel involved regardless of where they live within the municipality.
The group’s spokesperson, Sandra Martínez, argues that San Javier’s history deserves to be known and shared by all its residents.
Pleamar thanks the groups that voted in favour and expresses confidence that the council will take the steps needed to hold the first official commemoration on 16 September 2027.
