San Javier’s old cemetery will open its gates at 8.30pm on Saturday, 24 October, for another edition of its Tenorio experience, combining a sensory walk with a theatre performance.

The night-time cemetery route is free, while tickets for the play cost €15; ticket holders can enjoy both the walk and the theatre, or choose just one of the two experiences.

Municipal information published on Friday says the remaining tickets are available at Confiterías La Cierva, Papelería Gala and San Javier’s ticket-selling platform.

Candles, altars and music before the play

The route prepares visitors for the story of Don Juan and Doña Inés, set in Seville under Charles V, before they take their seats outside the cemetery walls.

The production of José Zorrilla’s work is adapted and directed by José Antonio Navas, who also performs in it.

The walk’s setting will include thousands of candles, altars with old religious images, reproductions of religious paintings, period furniture and supporting participants.

Music will accompany the route, with choral groups and string and wind ensembles among the contributions from cultural organisations taking part in the event.

Announced participants include San Javier’s music conservatoire and symphonic band, Coros y Danzas Mar Menor, Orfeón Fernández Caballero and Alicante’s Orquesta de Cámara Virtuós Mediterrani.

Associations and volunteers take part

This year’s additions include Murcia’s Iubitatis choir, the Conservatorio Superior Manuel Massotti Littel in Murcia and San Javier’s Cristo del Perdón drum and bugle band.

Religious brotherhoods from San Javier and Santiago de la Ribera are also involved, together with the local nativity scene association, which is helping to create the event’s visual setting.

Municipal workers and volunteers are working on preparations alongside culture councillor David Martínez, who has highlighted the involvement of local cultural organisations and groups invited from elsewhere.

The programme brings together a night-time cemetery visit and the theatrical classic in two successive spaces: the route inside the cemetery and the performance area beyond its walls.
