San Javier will be the starting point for the 2027 Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia Costa Cálida, which will again take place over two stages on 12 and 13 February.

The start of the 47th edition was presented at the town hall on Friday, 23 October, with representatives of the council, the regional government and the race organisers taking part.

The opening day will be named San Javier-Mar Menor, a designation intended to strengthen tourism promotion for the municipality and the area around the lagoon.

Two days with different profiles

Race director Paco Guzmán said the first stage would have a more accessible profile, while the second would return to the mountainous character traditionally associated with the Murcia race.

The full route will be announced shortly, so the San Javier presentation establishes the starting location and dates rather than setting out all the details of the course.

Guzmán also said several international teams had expressed an interest in taking part, with the first official confirmations expected over the coming weeks.

Fran Sánchez, the Murcia regional government’s director general for sport, supported the two-stage format because it allows professional cycling to reach more municipalities and bring the competition closer to residents.

Sports schools and tourism promotion

Mayor José Miguel Luengo highlighted the importance of hosting the start for local fans, sports schools and cycling groups, alongside the event’s role in promoting San Javier as a visitor destination.

Luengo thanked the organisers for their confidence and recalled the council’s close collaboration with the race, describing San Javier as an ally of the event.

The presentation was also attended by the councillor for sport, Sergio Martínez, alongside Sánchez, Luengo and Guzmán.

The race director thanked the institutions for their backing and described San Javier as a familiar, welcoming venue for the organisers, who are preparing an edition intended to combine competition with promotion of the Region of Murcia.
