The expansion of Torrevieja’s desalination plant has a new expected completion date of 18 May 2027, following a second extension approved by Acuamed.
The state-owned company’s board authorised an extension of six months and 18 days on 24 September for works designed to increase production capacity from 80 to 120 million cubic metres a year.
The revised timetable concerns completion of the works, not the immediate availability of all the additional water, as commissioning will require testing.
More capacity and a €97.6 million contract
The project will add 40 million cubic metres of annual capacity and strengthen both seawater pre-treatment and the reverse osmosis process.
Work began in July 2024 after the contract was awarded to a joint venture comprising Ferrovial, Cadagua and Sacyr.
The original award was worth €89.49 million including VAT, while the main contract budget now stands at €97.6 million following five modifications.
New pumps and reverse osmosis equipment
The expansion includes two new seawater intake pumps at the Poniente breakwater in Torrevieja’s port, beside Los Náufragos beach.
A 4,000-square-metre building will house five new reverse osmosis racks, while the 16 existing racks will be modified to increase output.
The project also includes new electrical equipment and expanded pumping systems to send desalinated water to distribution points.
The plant supplies irrigation schemes linked to the Tagus-Segura transfer and the Mancomunidad de los Canales del Taibilla; the delay pushes back the addition of the planned new volumes.
