The International Telematic University Uninettuno, based in Rome, has expressed its support for a proposal to establish a Creative Campus in Orihuela’s historic centre.
Juan José Sánchez Balaguer put forward the initiative when taking up his position as a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Valencian Culture.
The university’s rector, María Amata Garito, and the president of its Faculty of Cultural Heritage, Giovanni Puglisi, have stated their willingness to support the project.
Heritage, innovation and cultural businesses
In a letter to Sánchez Balaguer, Puglisi welcomes the collaboration proposal concerning the Mediterranean Creative Campus and Orihuela’s Cultural District.
The approach combines regeneration of the historic centre with the development of a business sector based on cultural and creative industries.
Puglisi identifies common ground with the university’s cultural heritage teaching, which focuses on ethics, sustainable tourism and enhancing the value of heritage.
He also highlights the relationship between cultural heritage, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, alongside a shared desire to use education to help stem the departure of creative talent from their home areas.
Willingness to sign a collaboration agreement
Sánchez Balaguer has welcomed the response and explained that several contacts have already taken place regarding the initiative.
According to the Orihuela academic, Uninettuno’s leadership is willing to sign a framework agreement for cultural and scientific collaboration that would give the project an international dimension.
Sánchez Balaguer regards the support of the two academic leaders as an honour and hopes it will help move the proposal forward.
A university specialising in distance learning
Garito founded Uninettuno in 2005 and developed its educational and organisational models, as well as its technological platform.
She has authored around 200 scientific publications and, from 1994 to 2013, held a professorship in Psychotechnologies in the Faculty of Psychology at Rome’s La Sapienza university.
Her research career focuses on technology applied to teaching and learning, with experience in international distance education projects.
Puglisi is president emeritus of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO and served as rector of the Kore University of Enna between 2011 and 2023.
