Taudi restaurant has won the classic cheesecake category at Benidorm’s first Cheesecake Competition, which was held at the Casa Museo l’Hort de Colón on Sunday, 25 October.

The event brought together 14 businesses and around twenty cheesecakes, with assessments by a professional jury and a public vote by people who sampled the entries.

The classic prize and the public’s choice

Yasmany, Taudi’s chef, represented the restaurant on Calle Presidente Adolfo Suárez with its entry and collected the trophy awarded in this category of the competition.

The business celebrated the recognition for its chef, while Arrocería La Mejillonera received second prize in the public vote held at the event.

The competition was devised by Daniel Arango, from consultancy Gastro Nova, and content creator Andrea Brewer, who is behind ‘Afina el paladar’.

It was organised with the collaboration of Benidorm council, the AICO traders’ association and Abreca.

The event began at 5pm with free admission and slices priced at €2 for classic cheesecakes and €2.50 for the entries in the creative category.

Four judging criteria and creative recipes

The professional jury scored each cheesecake from one to five, using decimal points, for creaminess, flavour, texture and presentation.

Visitors could vote for their favourite using a ballot box, while the programme also included free tastings of tea and coffee from Tey Sensaciones and artisan vermouth from Puig Campana.

The creative category featured combinations such as sobrasada and figs, alongside an entry from Melic, Toni Fuster’s stall at the municipal market, made with mature Manchego and Asturian blue cheese.

Cheese-me presented a ‘mountain cheesecake’ inspired by the Guadalest valley, with caramelised onion, thyme, rosemary, almonds and honey from a beekeeper in Benimantell.

Another entry was a cheesecake with confit bacon, bringing sweet and savoury flavours together through its creators’ experience in charcuterie.

Other participating businesses included Happy Cakes, Pastelería Sánchez, Baldó, Bruno’s and Los Fogones de Inés, all taking part in this first edition devoted to the popular dessert.
